The English Civil War and The Crabchurch Conspiracy

As Civil War raged throughout England in the 1640's the cry of battle could be heard all the stronger in Dorset. Colonel Sydenham and his men, including some of his family, braved out the horrors of war, which saw several hundred men struck down in one night in Weymouth. Fierce battles across the harbour ensued, the town was under siege and every man fought for himself as well as his cause.

All the principal towns of the county were involved in raising regiments and men from across Dorset and beyond had signed up to fight in the armies of both sides. Ordinary labouring men put down their tools to join the cause. No man's life was left untouched by a war that cared not for his status nor kith and kin. The lives of ordinary men were changed forever, scarred by the battles of personal valour and that of the regiment he joined.

The Crabchurch Conspiracy is the original title of a work by local author Mark Vine and has taken Mark a lot of research in finally coming together as a compelling book about these Dorset men. It is a true story, illustrated with original artwork by one of Weymouth's most talented artists, Semi Vine Along with photographs, potted biographies of the principal participants and lists of the ordinary soldiers, this is a book that will be of interest to historians and family history researchers alike. Also revealed for the first time are some hidden treasures of Weymouth's history.

In the seventeenth century the Sydenhams of Wynford Eagle in Dorset achieved fame and notoriety through their heroic exploits during the English Civil War, and thereafter in the fields of politics and most notably medicine.

Theirs is a story of almost fanatical dedication to their chosen cause and of stoic bravery in the very jaws of death. It is a true tale of intrigue, loyalty and revenge, set in England's most beautiful county.

Largely forgotten now in the mists of time, their incredible saga reached its military peak in Weymouth, one cold dark February night in 1645, the end game of a deadly conspiracy that ultimately caused the deaths of hundreds of people.

Long before the naval or literary Hardys, or the Tolpuddle Martyrs put Dorset on the more recent historical map, the Sydenham brothers laid down a history so tantalising that it should never again be forgotten.

They were the ultimate political soldiers.....and the very best of Dorset manhood.

Also included are the names of hundreds of ordinary civil war soldiers and civilians caught up in Dorset's most enthralling historical drama.
